Ganesh Devy took on a task so formidable, even he would have bet against himself.

Yet, the renowned linguistics scholar went on to map – with the help of 3,000 volunteers in every village and town across the country – all of India’s 780 languages in the largest linguistics survey carried out anywhere in the world.

And in The War of The Tongues, we talked to Devy about why he fights a hegemonistic approach to language, the nuclear power of words and why every language is worth fighting for.

This is one of the most riveting and germane conversations you’ll hear about language and identity, and it’s an essential watch in its entirety. Watch the full conversation above.
